Blog - June 7-12, 2005On ?Social Class?The New York Times (www.nytimes.com), trying to re-establish its presumed position as the leading edge or U.S. opinion leader on major issues, has been running a multi-part series on this topic over the past two weeks. They didn?t do a good job of it except for raising some major questions: Has the U.S.A. stopped being an ?equal opportunity society,? so that a child?s chance of moving up is practically nil if his folks are poor? [So, for example, can we ever expect to see another Abe Lincoln?] To what extent is ?opportunity? dependent on ?ownership??
